Speaking to reporters and media personalities at the construction site in Stung Meanchey on Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Hun Sen welcomes independent and joint committee to carry out an investigation on alleged election irregularities and find solution that will be acceptable on all sides. From his recorded message aired on the radio yesterday, the Premier didn't specifically mentioned that an international body will participate in the investigation. Although the Prime Minister welcomes investigation committee, it remains that NEC has to agree on the establishment of a joint committee. Yet, for the sake of Cambodia and its people, the Premier is open for dialogue to solve the problem peacefully. On the Premier's Official Facebook page the following post is written:
"After PM Samdech Hun Sen has agreed to open dialogue to solve any issues and concerns during election, Opposition Leader Sam Rainsy has agreed to an offer of talks from Prime Minister Hun Sen to discuss claims of voting irregularities."
The Prime Minister's willingness to an open dialogue and investigation to show transparency is an act of courage that deserves applause. The fact that Prime Minister Hun Sen is not threatened by an a join-committee investigation on alleged election fraud and irregularities, and also CNRP's claims of victory is an act of bravery. Welcoming a joint committee to investigate alleged election fraud could jeopardize and turn the unofficial results of the election favoring the CPP's claimed victory to 160 degree if allegations are proven true. Thus, the investigation is crucial to the future of the CPP in Cambodian politics. On the one hand, if the verdict favors CNRP's claims of victory, this could end the 28-year rule of Samdech Hun Sen. On the other hand, if the investigation favors CPP's claimed victory last Sunday, Hun Sen will extend his power and rule by another five years.
Being an insider yet outsider in Cambodia, I applaud both parties for agreeing to investigate and resolve election irregularities. I am confident that Cambodia is able solve this political problem related to the recent election. It looks like there is no need for UN, US or EU to intervene as people demanding on Facebook. Long live Cambodia!
